About us

At the request of the Department of Forecasting Services and Disaster Mitigation of the CMA (China Meteorological Administration) and at the suggestion from the National Typhoon and Marine Meteorology Experts Meeting, the China Typhoon Website, one of eight professional meteorological websites, was launched on 1 September 2002.

The main purpose of the China Typhoon Website is to offer information related to typhoons, including real-time typhoon movement, warning and prediction. Furthermore, it provides background scientific information on typhoons for the public and also provides information on past typhoon occurrences. Special customers such as typhoon research and forecast units can have easy access to different types of predictions from multiple national and international prediction centers.

Currently, the Chinese version of China Typhoon Website contains the following information: the latest typhoon locations, intensities and forecasts, satellite imagery and synoptic charts, real-time radar images, a historical typhoon database (typhoon track and intensity, annual review, annual typhoon report), and general typhoon information (such as typhoon categories, typhoon name, operational planning, warning criteria, impact of typhoon). Information on typhoon research, meteorological news, a typhoon discussion board, and related links are also included. The English version currently contains only the typhoon locations, intensities and forecasts. Further pages will be added to improve the website in the future. The China Typhoon Website aims to meet the public demand for meteorological information related to typhoons. We strive to build a website to provide the Chinese meteorological community with extensive information and products. The China Typhoon Website is a public special meteorological service website directly under CMA, and administered and maintained by the Shanghai Typhoon Institute of CMA.
